Default Australia: Adler shotgun importation ban to be lifted after Government cuts deal with David Leyonhjelm

The Federal Government has agreed to allow the importation of a controversial shotgun in one year's time, in exchange for the support of a crossbench senator on migration issues.*

The Government temporarily suspended the importation of the Adler lever-action shotgun in July, while it reviewed firearms laws in the wake of the Martin Place siege.

"These firearms are not dangerous, they aren't used in crime, there's nothing about them that warrants any special action," Senator Leyonhjelm said.

"Nonetheless, there are some people who don't like guns and they see this as the next area in which they can encroach."
The Government said the ban was only necessary while it reviewed the technical elements of the National Firearms Agreement.
But Senator Leyonhjelm said the gun lobby feared the ban would remain.
"There's nothing quite as permanent as a temporary ban," he said.

The Sporting Shooters Association also called for the weapon to be made available for hunting feral pests like pigs.
"Queensland has a huge wild pig problem which threatens [and], apart from day to day cropping issues and grazing issues, is a huge biosecurity problem for Australia and both farmers, graziers and sporting shooters, feral pest controllers are forced to deal with pigs on this basis," president Geoff Jones said.
"These things are not machine guns. These things are mechanisms which have been around, to be honest, for over 150 years."

*I don't know what the agreement on migration issues are. Sounds bad. I don't know. But apart from the Shooters and Fishers Party he's the only gun lobbyist in parliament I know of.
