A couple in Texas was officially sentenced for dissolving the remains of their 2-year-old daughter in a tub of acid on Friday reports Laredo Morning Times. 38-year-old Monica Dominguez and her 32-year-old husband Zavala Loredo's house was raided by the police who then subsequently arrested the pair back in February. Upon investigating their apartment, they found the remains of their 2-year-old daughter Rebecka Zavala, in what is alleged to have been a five-gallon container of acid kept hidden in their bedroom closet.

Dominguez and Loredo were charged with tampering, fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair a human corpse, a second-degree felony. They were also charged with abuse of corpse without legal authority charge, a state jail felony.

While Loredo took a plea deal and was sentenced to 14 years in prison, his wife Dominguez was given a 20-year prison sentence. Child Protective Services took custody of the couple’s other four children, aged 1 to 11. The courts tried them together when the state filed for a motion which was granted in July. As per bond records, the couple were held for $125,000 (Loredo) and $175,000 (Dominguez) respectively.

The judgment that was declared upon Dominguez is stated to be running alongside another 10-year revocation sentence for violation of probation in an earlier child injury case wherein her 9-month-old son had suffered six bone fractures in 2015. At the time, she and her husband denied hurting the child. But in 2016, she pleaded guilty and sentenced to 10 years probation.

Loredo's defense attorney, Abundio Rene Cantu spoke to KGSN-TV saying that neither Dominguez nor Loredo could be stamped with a murder charge because the state of Rebecka's remains prevented authorities from determining a cause of death. While the investigation was ongoing, Dominguez had told the authorities that their daughter Rebecka's death was accidental. The little girl was drowned in a bathtub when left unsupervised by the parents, as informed by the authorities. The parents pleaded guilty after Dominguez admitted that she had asked her husband Loredo to somehow dispose of the body.
