Migrants Will Be Banned From Making Asylum Claims At Sea: UK "Trys To Fix Broken System"

Migrants who are rescued during an attempted crossing of the English Channel will be banned from making a UK asylum claim while at sea under new laws being brought forward by the Home Office.A post-Brexit shake-up of asylum rules could ultimately result in intercepted migrant boats being immediately taken back to France. The UK has long called on Paris to do more to stop the crossings with the two sides disagreeing on whether the boats can be intercepted. Imigration Minister Chris Philp told The Telegraph: 'We are determined to fix the broken asylum system to make it firm on those who come here through illegally facilitated routes and fair on those who play by the rules.

'These measures send a clear message and are just one of the steps the Government is taking to tackle the unacceptable rise in small boat crossings. 'This includes working with our French partners to stop migrants leaving a safe country and making these dangerous journeys.' The new laws, expected to be brought forward in the New Year, will reportedly replace the EU's current Dublin Regulations which state migrants should claim asylum in the first European country they entered. But the UK's proposals would be much tougher because they would also stop people from being able to claim asylum while at sea. Home Secretary Priti Patel said in July that a row over the interpretation of maritime law was preventing France from stopping boats even if they are only a matter of metres off the coast. She said the UK was adamant that France does have the legal authority to stop the boats but officials on the continent disagree. She said the UK is 'fundamentally looking at changing ways of working with France' in order to improve the situation as she said 'intercepting and returning the boats' is the only way to make the route 'unviable'.
