Fear - Strategy Session - The MIR Network

404 - File or directory not found.

"And here comes in the question whether it is better to be loved rather than feared, or feared rather than loved. It might perhaps be answered that we should wish to be both, but since love and fear can hardly exist together if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved. For of men it may generally be affirmed, that they are thankless, fickle, false, studious to avoid danger, greedy of gain, devoted to you while you are able to confer benefits upon them, and read, as I said before, while danger is distant, to shed their blood, and sacrifice their property, their lives, and their children for you; but in the hour of need they turn against you." Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince, XVII Of Cruelty and Clemency, and Whether It Is better to Be Loved or Feared

I believe that it depends on who is doing the loving and fearing. Respect is more desirable and longer lasting than either love or fear. Love becomes complacency over time and fear is measured by proximity. Respect is more or less a combination of love & fear in different measures and degrees. However, actions and the threat of actions or the promise of actions is more solid than feelings. Knowing the other is reliable and can be counted on for those actions is the basis of love and fear.

Integrity is doing the right thing when no one else is watching.
“Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth — more than ruin, more even than death. Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habits; thought is anarchic and lawless, indifferent to authority, careless of the well-tried wisdom of the ages. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid … Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.”Bertrand Russell, Why Men Fight
