I have to admit, I greatly prefer meat over plants.

Good point Defiance and love the humorous pics. I agree as well on vegetarians who eat fish are hypocrites or closet vegetarians....even though big fish eat small fish...

I don't care for fish or eggs though.

Gargoyle, you and I are completely landlocked, so if you really want to experience what fish should really taste like then I encourage you to try a mild tasting species like sea bass, swordfish, or tilapia.....not from the grocery deli, which is seven days from the sea, but fresh from the nets or lines of true fisherman.

September brings in the best Alaskian salmon from the streams of the Nushagak River during spawning season. Grill it on a cedar plank....mango salsa.....unbelievable taste that melts in the mouth!

            Oh forgot...........this is a vegetarian thread.......sorry Defiance, couldn't resist.

You can't smell fresh fish, it smells clean. If you can smell it, it has already started to turn.

Good point Fred. Eating fresh caught fish within hours of a catch, still flapping, is completely different in smell than day seven in the deli. In addition, a salt water catch has more flavor than any freshwater catch any day of the week.

IMO, the best tasting fish are as follows:

Sac-A-Lait, (white Perch) an over-sized perch.

Walleye, another member of the perch family.

Lemonfish, (Cobia) a saltwater fish that looks like a shark but isn't.

Triggerfish, they prefer to only eat sea urchins, but you can catch them on shrimp. Most people (that haven't tried them) believe they are a trash fish.

Channel Catfish & Blue Catfish, with hush puppies and slaw.

Redfish (Red Drum), sun dried on the gunnel with a dash of tabasco. (Sushi)

Speckled Trout, (Weakfish) fried with fried shrimp, fried soft crab & oysters.

Flounder, stuffed with lump crab meat & spices.

The worst tasting fish is Cod & Salmon, IMHO.

I live on the Gulf coast, where salt & fresh water species are available, and I don't think there is much difference (other than fat content) in fresh fish. The key is freshness. There are some fish others love that I wouldn't touch, like Sheepshead (too bony) or King Mackrel (too bloody). Shark is a very tasty fish, and it has no bones (also, it's cartilage prevents cancer). The best fish is one you catch yourself, then cook over a campfire as the sun goes down on an island with no one else around but your fishing buddies.

Then, sit back with a Cuban cigar and a cold brewskie and talk of the day. It doesn't get any better than that. After a couple of hours laughing at the day's events and having 4 or 5 beers, there's nothing better than a warm sleeping bag and a cool onshore breeze.

I can't wait for the weather to change, I have a group of friends that are dying to get offshore and camp at Last Island.

A couple of my sons-in-law wanted to go catch Bull Reds, said they never caught anything bigger than a Largemouth Bass. I asked them how many they wanted to catch. They said maybe 20 or 30. LOL, I took them and after 4 fish each they had had enough. A Bull Red fights like a runaway locomotive (on light tackle). It takes 20-40 minutes to land them and it's a struggle all the way. The only fish that fights as hard (but not as long) is a shark or Lemonfish. Even Tarpon & Tuna will give up easier.

If you have never been to a Tarpon Rodeo in Louisiana, you haven't lived. Everybody is as wild as a Texas twister, inhibitions cannot be found.

This isn't the first time India has produced such news, if I recall correctly. And this country just so happens to host the largest number of vegetarians on Earth, per capita.

Seriously now, if these people can understand, why can't we?
