        BERT LINDER
        Obituary

        LINDER
--Bert. The community of West End Synagogue, A Reconstructionist Congregation, is stricken by the news of Bert's sudden death. A founder and shaper of our shul, he became one of its dependables. It is very painful to know we will never again have his ever available wise counsel, nor the aura of humor and good cheer that sheltered us all impartially. He was both a mensche and a true alpha male. Our endless love and support to his beloved wife Bliss and to Ellen, Steve, Rebecca and Adira and their families.

              Progressive Jews Organize

......Rabbi John Linder, of B'Nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim, a Reform temple outside Chicago, views the organizing work as fundamentally different from traditional charity. "This work is not about one person helping someone else who has less," explains Linder, who before attending rabbinical school had been an organizer for Massachusetts Fair Share and the Service Employees International Union. "It's a shift from a patronizing 'Look what I can do for you' way of operating to a 'What can we do together?' way of acting."

Manalapan's Sons of Israel marks its 90th anniversary

.....There were always members who were active in some aspect of community affairs," said Jack Linder of Marlboro, who has been a congregant for 42 years and is chair of the anniversary committee. "We've had members who were presidents of Jewish day schools and some who were part of an interfaith program that was held at local high schools. I've always felt that being a member of this synagogue also meant being an active member of the general community."

But being part of Jewish and community life could occasionally be a hurtful experience, Linder told NJ Jewish News.

"Twenty years ago, a nearby synagogue was desecrated with swastikas," said Linder. "It was a terrible reminder that hatred and intolerance still exist. But people from the Jewish and non-Jewish communities came together, went to that synagogue, and erased those ugly symbols. That sense of unity reaffirmed our belief in the essential goodness of our neighbors and our community."

Exhibit helps bank atone for Hitler article
April 23, 2004|By Manya A. Brachear, Tribune staff reporter.

When a Glenview bank sparked outrage publishing a newsletter hailing Adolf Hitler's economic policies, one north suburban synagogue saw an opportunity for reconciliation.

The incident offered a chance to educate both bank executives and the congregation about the Jewish notion of forgiveness--a concept that requires action and an apology, said Rabbi John Linder of Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim in Glenview.

"The apology only has meaning if the party that hurts you takes actions to make sure they don't do it again," Linder said. "We're going on the basis that the bank really is repenting with sincerity, and we've seen them take some steps to demonstrate that."

By way of an apology, Glenview State Bank has opened an exhibit featuring photographs taken by a group of teenagers from the temple during a visit to the Czech Republic, where they cleaned the graves of the parents of Holocaust victims who were taken to concentration camps as children.

The exhibit, which also includes poems and reflections, will be on display from Friday until April 30 in the lobby of the bank's branch at 1707 Shermer Rd., Northbrook.

"This exhibit expresses a Jewish population completely wiped out," said Paul Jones, the bank's president, chairman and chief executive officer, who met with the teens. "The synagogue and the kids have taken the responsibility of keeping that heritage alive in that town."

The exhibit also reflects the bank's attempt to take responsibility for what happened in July, when David Raub, then bank president and author of the Outlook newsletter, praised Hitler for policies that "led German workers to work harder than anyone else in Europe" and instilled "national confidence."

The commentary generated more than 400 telephone calls and e-mails to the Midwest branch of the Anti-Defamation League, which sent Raub a written complaint.

"It's definitely an affront to the victims that suffered under Nazi tyranny and fundamentally lacks any context as to the evil that was attached to Nazi policies and the Nazi apparatus of terror," said Richard Hirschhaut, the league's Midwest regional director. "We definitely took issue with the wisdom of positing such a theory in the year 2003."

Raub, now the bank's executive vice president of the trust and investment management department, couldn't be reached for comment.

The newsletter and other materials were included in a packet the teens took with them to Prague. The incident happened shortly before they departed.

"Our job was to help our kids process that there are still, to this day, people who have a lack of understanding about the Holocaust," Linder said.

The connection between the congregation and the village of Kolin, where the graves are located, was established in the mid-1970s when the synagogue received one of the town's Torahs--a sacred scroll that survived the Holocaust.

The trip in August was the third to Kolin by the synagogue's young people, who celebrated a Torah service in an abandoned synagogue and cleaned overgrown plants and debris off tombstones.

"Part of their mission in going to this village is to give some firsthand testament to this period of history, and to make sure by memorializing those that perished in the Holocaust that they're keeping their memories alive," Linder said.

Rebecca Frazin, 16, of Deerfield said the trip was empowering.

"When we were in Prague, we were going to change everything," she said. "When we got back, we decided this isn't right. We should do something about it."

Together with Jones, the students decided to install the exhibit for Yom HaShoah, International Holocaust Memorial Day.

"A lot of us made up our minds after talking to the bank executives," said Logan Zinman, 17, of Park Ridge. "We all sort of decided . . . they were sorry and they actually cared. I think that solidified it for a lot of us."

The exhibit is not the bank's only act of reconciliation. Last fall, officials from the Anti-Defamation League accompanied Jones and two other company executives to Washington for a tour of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Jones said he was moved to make a donation that helped cover the cost of an annual reunion of Holocaust survivors in Washington. The bank also co-sponsored the league's annual African-American and Jewish Seder in March.

The bank's actions have proved to the congregation that the offense was an aberration, Linder said.

Hirschhaut said he admires the way the bank handled the incident.

"It just required for their own peace of mind for them to do everything in their power to set the record straight," he said.

"In many ways this is a classic instance of lemons becoming lemonade."

                    Goucher Hillel Receives First Torah

                    Release date: February 02, 2012

Goucher Hillel has received its first-ever Torah, thanks to the generosity of Shaare Tikvah Congregation of Waldorf, MD, and the Linder family of Yardley, PA.

Jo-Anne Tucker Zemlak, Seaboard Region Kehilla coordinator for the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, made the match between Shaare Tikvah and Goucher Hillel. The Linder family was moved to fund the Torah after attending High Holy Day services at Goucher for the last three years.

Over the course of the semester, Hillel will build a new ark to permanently house the Torah, and it will procure special Torah covers for High Holidays and the rest of the year.

Nancy Gertner, chair of Goucher Hillel's Board of Directors, said, "We are thrilled for the generosity of the Linders and the synagogue, and we are so excited for Goucher Hillel to have its own Torah."

Rabbi Josh Snyder expressed how much this means to the Hillel community. "The Torah will enable us to convene services and Torah study on a regular basis, giving students literal access to the richness of Jewish tradition right here on campus. Even beyond this, the deeper meaning of our community having its own Torah — housed and adorned in a way that is fully Goucher — should make everyone associated with Goucher Hillel proud."

Eli Kaufman '15, Hillel Shabbat co-chair, said "Having a Torah on campus is great because it can help further our knowledge. We can use it as a teaching tool to educate the students of Hillel."

Hillel plans to formally dedicate the Torah and honor the congregation and the Linder family during its annual meeting on May 1.

                      Was Max Linder Jewish?

Recently Eric Greenberg, a reporter with the New York Jewish Week, telephoned Arlene Rich, president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Cleveland, with an urgent question. “He wanted to know: ‘Was Max Linder Jewish?’ ” Rich relates. “I think we had only one hour to deadline.”

First, Rich checked her society’s transcriptions of burials at Mayfield Cemetery, a Jewish burial ground, and found Linder’s name. Second, she scanned the old Jewish Society Book, which told her that the one-time department store owner had been a member of The Temple, a prominent synagogue. Third, she called Probate Court and found a record of Linder’s 1910 marriage to Stella Dryfoos, which had been performed by a rabbi named Moses Gries.

Still within the same hour, Rich spoke with several members of the Dryfoos family, a large and noteworthy Jewish clan in Cleveland and Fremont, Ohio, and confirmed that the Linders had a daughter, Louise, in 1911. She also found an entry for Max Linder’s sister, Belle Israels Moskowitz, in the 1928 edition of Who’s Who in American Jewry.
When the hour was up, Rich relayed the results of her research to Greenberg. “I basically told him, ‘Go, man, go,’” she recalls.

That was all Greenberg needed to hear. The next Jewish Week conveyed the interesting information that Linda McCartney, the recently deceased wife of Beatle Paul McCartney, had been Jewish. A victim of breast cancer, Linda was the daughter of Louise Linder of Cleveland and Lee Eastman, previously Epstein, of Rochester, N.Y.

                        Béla Linder

Béla Linder (Majs, 10 February 1876 – Belgrade, 15 April 1962), Hungarian colonel of artillery, Secretary of War of Mihály Károlyi government, minister without portfolio of Dénes Berinkey government, military attaché of Hungarian Soviet Republic based in Vienna, finally the mayor of Pécs during the period of Serb occupation.

Secretary of War for nine days

The father of Béla Linder was of Jewish origin, and was "part of the inner circle of Franz Ferdinand, and when the heir to the throne was assassinated, Lindert was (...) kicked out of the military leadership staff". Presumably after this incident he was actively looking for contact with people who were seeking change.

In 1918, during the so-called "Aster Revolution" his career suddenly rocketed from colonel status to Secretary of War on 31 October 1918. He swore to the government of Mihály Károlyi in front of the Hungarian Parliament on 2 November 1918.

During the swearing-in ceremony (wearing a red tie) he spoke the infamous words: "[T]raditions of a thousand years and slavery of a thousand years had to be demolished. Five years of war were needed, thousands and thousands of deaths were needed so that a new victorious life could emerge from it. This new victorious life is born under pacifism. (...) No need for armies anymore! I do not want to see any soldiers anymore! (...) Make an oath that you will bring up your children in such a way that the possibility of war is shut out!"

Referring to the negotiations with the Entente Cordiale, the Ministry of Military led by Linder sent a telegraph to the Foreign Office on 6 November 1918 to order the German troops onto the banks of Danube and Sava, which they refused.

Later the complete honvéds of the ex-Austrian-Hungarian army were asked to return and to hand over all weapons. This led to Hungary being totally defenseless.

                        Minister without portfolio

Criticised for his dilettantism, he resigned as Secretary of War on 9 November, but he kept his membership in the government. His task was to lead the negotiations for the preparations of the peace treaty.

On 7 November there were already negotiations in Belgrade between the delegation led by Mihály Károlyi and the commander of eastern Entente troops, general Franchet d'Esperey. On 13 November, Linder signed the cease-fire agreement, together with General Henrys (commander of French Eastern Army) and voivode Živojin Mišić (commander general of the Serb army).

During the period of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, he was engaged in numerous diplomatic moves as the military attaché of the Ministry of Military in Vienna (2 May – 5 August 1919)

                        Activities in Baranya, fleeing abroad

After the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, he joined the Socialist Party, and on 23 September 1920 he became the mayor of Pécs. At this time Pécs was still occupied by the Serb army, even though there was a valid border agreement with Entente.

Later he was the leader of the Pécs-Baranya Republic and on 14 August 1921 of the Baranya–Baja Serbian–Hungarian Republic. The latter republic was upheld for eight days, and its president was painter Petar Dobrović.

When the Serb troops left the Baranya region for Yugoslavia on 14 August 1921, Linder joined them.

                        His remembrance

Linder lived in Yugoslavia till his death. The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and Josip Broz Tito's Yugoslavia honoured him, and he received an honorary tomb in Belgrade.

However, Hungarians condemn him as he had a significant part in the borders of the Republic of Hungary being set disadvantageously at the Treaty of Trianon and Hungary had no armies to counter the inordinate demands of the Little Entente.

Son fights to move mother from Christian cemetery

By Marcus Dysch, July 29, 2010

A bereaved son has described his frustration after an unsuccessful three-year battle to have his mother's body moved from a Christian cemetery to a Jewish resting place.

Eugene Linder's late mother, Biba Skodnik, is buried in Finland. He has pleaded with the country's Prime Minister and President to allow him to reinter her in Switzerland, where his family now lives.

But despite the assistance of London-based Rabbi Aba Dunner of the Conference of European Rabbis, Mr Linder has failed to receive permission from the Finnish authorities to move her.

Mrs Skodnik died in 2007 while the family was living in Tampere, Finland. With no Jewish cemetery available and unable to afford to transfer her body to a different city, Mr Linder was forced to bury his mother in a Christian cemetery in the city.

He has since moved to Bern, Switzerland, and hopes to have his mother reinterred there in a family plot at a Jewish cemetery.

Mr Linder said: "I would like my mother to be buried here in our family plot, where I too intend to be buried eventually.

"The big problem is that the Finnish authorities will not give permission for her to be reinterred. No matter how hard I try, they have not been very encouraging.

"I have clearly explained the religious position and that it is normal that Jewish people should be buried in a Jewish cemetery.

"I am at the end of my tether; what else can I do? It beggars belief. I'm not asking for any special privileges or favours. There is a legal duty [to move her] and there's also the moral aspect."

Rabbi Dunner added: "Unless there are serious and valid reasons preventing the exhumation of this body, we feel that Mr Linder has the right to demand that his mother be transferred for religious reasons.

"These are basic rights that are respected by all European countries and therefore Finland should allow Mr Linder to fulfil his religious beliefs."

A spokesman for Helsinki's chevrah kadisha said: "We have done maybe one or two moves, taking people to Israel. It should be allowed for Mr Linder to move his mother."

Emma Marjamäki, of Finland's Regional Government Agency, was unable to comment on Mr Linder's case directly, but said: "Moving bodies is very difficult in Finland. The law considers the grave to be the last resting place and to get permission to move the body is not easy.

"Mr Linder would need permission from the city of Tampere's environmental health department, permission from us, plus some permission from the Swiss embassy and an airline."

She said the city and regional authorities would charge around 170 euros [Ł140] each to consider the application for reburial.

Discussion about the Origin and Meaning of the Jewish Surnames - Finding relatives in Argentina

The vast majority of Argentine Jews are descended from immigrants who arrived from Europe. These ashkenazic Jews migrated from small towns or shtetels of Poland, Lithuania, Russia, Germany, Romania or Ukraine, leaving behind most of their Jewish relatives. After two or three generations, those Jewish families lost track of their relatives, having been saved from the war, emigrated to other countries like USA, England or Australia.

A little known fact of Providence Jewish history is that Congregation Mishkon Tfiloh is the spiritual heir of Congregation Ahavath Sholom, the Howell Street Synagogue. The connection between the two synagogues is something my family was intimately involved with, ever since my grandfather Philip Abraams helped found Ahavath Sholom, the first synagogue on the East Side, in 1905......

The first officers of the reconstituted synagogue were my grandfather Philip Abraams (honorary president), Irwin Priest (president), Max Charren (vice president), Abraham Linder (secretary), and Barnett Pickar (treasurer). All these gentlemen had previously served with distinction in Congregation Ahavath Sholom. My grandfather, who died in 1952, spent the first half of the 20th century in service to Ahavath Sholom, serving as one of its first treasurers, later one of its most beloved presidents, and finally a revered gabbai, and board member.
